Year Three Goals and the Path Forward

Writer: K.A. SimpsonK.A. Simpson

As I step into my third year serving on the Covington Independent Schools Board of Education, I reflect on the progress we’ve made and the challenges that lie ahead. Serving in this role has been both humbling and invigorating, reinforcing my deep commitment to the students, families, and educators in our community.

Strengthening Academic Excellence

One of my primary goals this year is to continue strengthening academic programs and student outcomes. We have made strides, but there is still work to be done. This means evaluating our curriculum, ensuring equity in access to advanced coursework, and increasing targeted interventions for students who need additional support. The recent discussions surrounding our district’s performance scores reaffirm the need for continued intentional strategies to improve student achievement.

Expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE)

In today’s rapidly evolving job market, we must prepare our students not just for college but for successful careers. Expanding career and technical education opportunities will be a major focus this year. Whether through apprenticeships, industry partnerships, or dual enrollment programs, I am committed to ensuring our students graduate with real-world skills that lead to meaningful employment and economic mobility.

Enhancing Community Engagement

A strong school system is built on strong community partnerships. I want to deepen engagement with parents, business leaders, and local organizations to ensure that our schools remain a central force for positive change in Covington. This includes increasing parental involvement, fostering mentorship programs, and creating more opportunities for the community to contribute to student success.

Fiscal Responsibility and Strategic Planning

As stewards of public funds, we must continue to be intentional about resource allocation. Ensuring that every dollar spent maximizes student outcomes is crucial. This year, I will work with my fellow board members to ensure budget transparency, advocate for equitable funding, and push for sustainable financial strategies that support long-term district growth.

Prioritizing Student Well-Being

Student success is about more than academics—it’s about ensuring that every child has the support they need to thrive emotionally and socially. Expanding access to mental health resources, supporting initiatives that address chronic absenteeism, and fostering a safe and inclusive school environment remain top priorities.

Looking Ahead

Year three is an opportunity to build on the foundation we’ve laid and push forward with renewed energy. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by the Covington community, and I remain dedicated to making a lasting impact.

Let’s continue working together to ensure that every student in Covington Independent Schools has the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.

I welcome your thoughts, feedback, and partnership as we embark on this next chapter.
