One Step Closer to Making History: Why Covington's Journey Toward Becoming a District of Innovation Matters

There are moments in public service that remind you why you chose to serve in the first place.

At our most recent Covington Independent School District Board of Education meeting, we took one of those meaningful steps. The Board voted to move forward in the process of becoming a true district of innovation, positioning Covington Independent Schools to become the first school district in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to pursue this designation under the state's newly established School of Innovation framework.

While this may sound like another policy decision to some, I believe it represents something much bigger. It represents a commitment to reimagining what education can look like when local communities are trusted to lead.

For far too long, school districts have often been required to fit into systems designed for the "average" district. But the truth is, there is no average community. Every district has unique strengths, unique challenges, and unique opportunities. Covington is no exception.

The District of Innovation framework, established through new Kentucky legislation, provides qualifying school districts with greater flexibility from certain state statutes and administrative regulations. More importantly, it empowers educators and local leaders to think creatively about how we prepare students for the world they are inheriting—not the one we grew up in.

Innovation isn't about change for the sake of change.

It's about asking better questions.

How do we create classrooms that inspire curiosity instead of compliance?

How do we remove barriers that prevent our educators from doing their best work?

How do we prepare students not only for college and careers but also for leadership, entrepreneurship, creativity, and civic engagement?

These are the questions that innovation invites us to answer.

As a member of the Covington Independent Board of Education, I believe our responsibility extends beyond simply maintaining our schools. We have a duty to build schools that are responsive to the needs of today's learners while preparing them for tomorrow's opportunities.

This designation will not magically solve every challenge we face. There is still work ahead. We must engage educators, families, students, community partners, and state leaders throughout this process. We must continue listening. We must remain transparent. And we must ensure that every decision we make is grounded in what is best for children.

What excites me most is that this journey isn't simply about being first.

Being first is meaningful—but being transformative matters even more.

If Covington can successfully demonstrate what innovation looks like, our district has the opportunity to become a model not only for Kentucky but for school systems across the nation that are seeking new ways to improve student outcomes while honoring local leadership.

I've always believed that education should be one of our community's greatest engines of opportunity. Every child deserves access to an educational experience that recognizes their potential, nurtures their talents, and equips them to thrive in an ever-changing world.

This vote represents another step toward that vision.

I am incredibly proud of my fellow board members, our superintendent, district leadership, our educators, and everyone who has contributed to moving this work forward. Innovation is never the result of one person. It is built through collaboration, courage, and a shared belief that our students deserve our very best.

The future of education is being written today.
